In a crucial infrastructure development, the L.B. Knox Bridge in Ormond Beach will temporarily close from October 5 to 14, 2023, for an essential bearing replacement project. Highbridge Road will also experience a temporary closure, stretching from John Anderson Drive to Walter Boardman Lane to facilitate construction. The affected area encompasses a vital transportation route, crossing the Halifax River in northeast Volusia County.
The L.B. Knox Bridge is an integral component of the northern leg of the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, connecting key areas for residents and visitors, and has served the community since its construction in 1955. It stands among the 50 county-maintained bridges in Volusia County, representing a significant part of the region's transportation network.
Residents and motorists are encouraged to utilize alternative routes throughout this temporary closure. The recommended detours include the Granada Bridge on State Road 40 in Ormond Beach or State Road 100 in Flagler Beach. Adequate detour signs and closure notices have been strategically placed along these routes to provide clear guidance to the public, ensuring a smooth transition during the construction period.
It's important to note that boat traffic on the Halifax River will remain unaffected throughout the construction phase, allowing maritime activities to continue without disruption.
