A woman who originally was threatening to jump from the second floor of a Daytona Beach Motel, was charged with Animal Cruelty after throwing her dog over the railing instead.

Volusia County Sheriff and Daytona Beach Police Department responded to a call to the Motel 6 off of International Speedway Blvd, around Noon on Monday. Motel staff had reported 35-year-old Allison Murphy had been standing over the railing threatening to jump from the second story of the motel and attacked one of the maids.

When deputies arrived, Murphy had locked herself inside of her room.

After knocking on the door several times, Murphy eventually came out of the motel lodgings with a leashed German Shepherd. Murphy picked up the German Shepherd and suddenly threw the dog over the railing to the ground.

The dog landed feet first and ran away before being corralled by bystanders, according to reports.

Murphy was immediately taken into custody by deputies and police, while Animal Services took guardianship of the dog, who they nicknamed “Miracle”, as no name for the dog was provided. Miracle was transported to Atlantic Animal Hospital in Port Orange for an emergency evaluation.

Thankfully, Miracle’s examination showed there were no severe injuries acquired from the abuse; however, a sewing needle was found lodged in her right thigh. Miracle underwent a procedure to remove the needle safely and is now in the care of Animal Services.

According to a release from VCSO, Animal Services will petition for custody over Miracle with the courts over the next coming weeks.

Volusia County Animal Services and the Sheriff's Office continue to work together as partners to save and improve the lives of abused animals. Anyone who witnesses animal cruelty or abuse is encouraged to contact Animal Services at 386-248-1790, or the Sheriff’s Office at 386-248-1777, or 911 in an emergency.

Murphy was arrested on felony charges of animal cruelty and resisting an officer with violence.
