Sea turtle nesting season will begin on May 1, and as a result, Volusia County wants to teach oceanfront property owners how to light their properties without harming the turtles. A free Beach Lighting Expo will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 27, at the Daytona Beach Shores Community Center, located at 3000 Bellemead Drive in Daytona Beach Shores.
According to a release, staff from Volusia County’s Environmental Management Division, with other industry experts, will educate residents about sea turtles, the county’s lighting ordinance, and appropriate beachside lighting methods. County staff will also be available to discuss individual property lighting challenges.
Vendors like Florida Power & Light and SESCO Lighting will show off their sea turtle-friendly products, including lighting fixtures, shields, tinting, and window treatments. Agencies and nonprofits, such as Volunteer Volusia and Marine Science Center, will also be on site.
Volusia encourages all oceanfront property owners, contractors, and hospitality staff to attend. For more, visit https://bit.ly/30jTrWq, email nweiss@volusia.org, or call (386)238-4773.
