Volusia County’s Resource Stewardship Division started a 32-acre prescribed burn at 11 a.m. today in the Lake George Forest and Wildlife Management Area.
The yellow trail will be closed during the burn as it takes place north of Nine Mile Point Road and east of Powerline Road.
Overgrowth causes multiple issues such as dry vegetation, which increases the risk of wildfires, and lowers forage quality. Human intervention is needed to keep the healthy habitat in balance.
Prescribed fire is the most effective land treatment method because of the complex chemical, biological and physical processes that fire stimulates, lowering many overgrowth problems and keeping the forest maintained.
