Sheriff Michael J. Chitwood, Volusia County Sheriff, held a press conference on the scene of a shooting at the Volusia County Vehicle Maintenance Facility off of Indian Lake Road, Thursday morning.
According to Sheriff Chitwood, the shooting was not a random act of violence, but a targeted crime due to a “love triangle”.
It was stated that all three people involved in this incident (including the deceased) were current employees with Volusia County.
The Sheriff reported that the suspect left work early – from another maintenance building down the road from the Vehicle Maintenance Facility – where the shooting took place, due to a family emergency. The suspect showed up to confront the victim, who was working on a vehicle at the time, regarding relations with the wife of the suspect.
According to the Sheriff, the suspect began shooting at the victim, at point-blank range. After firing at the victim, the suspect put down his jacket and the gun before walking out to his truck and waiting for sheriff deputies to arrive on the scene.
“The suspect was cooperative, and we are not looking for anyone in this case,” Chitwood said during the press conference.
Once sheriff deputies were on scene, the victim was transported to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, where he later passed away due to his injuries.
The identities and positions of the deceased and those involved have not been released at this time.
