Daytona Beach residents may have noticed crews at work in their neighborhoods and commercial areas conducting "smoke testing" on the nearly 36 miles of sewer pipes.

Smoke testing is an efficient test method used to identify defects such as cracks, leaks, or faulty connections in the sanitary sewer collection system. Due to these defects, rainwater can enter the sewer, which can cause problems within the system. To avoid problems, crews will conduct smoke testing to identify problem areas in the sewer system. Utilities will not be interrupted during the testing.

During smoke testing, workers blow dense white smoke into the sewer system from the street and monitor where the smoke escapes, quickly revealing any cracks or breaks in pipes. The smoke used is odorless, non-toxic, non-staining, and similar to products used at concerts and sporting events during performances. It will dissipate quickly and is not harmful to pets or plants, nor does it leave a residue.

The project will also include the inspection of 794 manhole covers and "rain dish" installations, which sit below the covers to create an additional barrier to keep rainwater and debris from entering the sewer system. Crews will conduct the smoke test from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting. The testing should be completed by Friday, March 24.
