The State of Florida's annual Severe Weather Awareness Week is recognized this year from February 7 to 11.

Volusia County’s Emergency Management Team will give several daily tips, reminders, and information about staying safe, such as staying away from windows and electronics during lightning storms and developing a family disaster plan.

“Florida has an abundance of sunshine and great weather all year-round,” Volusia County Interim Public Protection Director Mark Swanson shared. “But we also have plenty of severe weather that can be quite dangerous. Severe Weather Awareness Week is an important time to take inventory, go over your family safety plan and checklist to make sure you are prepared.”

Starting Monday, each day will talk about hazard themes. They will include each type of hazard: lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, rip currents, and wildfires.
